Today, we explore the colourful town of Wernigerode, known for its half-timbered houses, charming market square and fairytale streets set against the dramatic Harz Mountains. We begin with a guided walking tour through the Old Town, uncovering its medieval charm and vibrant history. Later, we transfer to Wernigerode Castle, perched high above the town, where we enjoy time to explore its opulent interiors and panoramic views. After lunch, we take a scenic ride on the delightful castle railway.

After breakfast, we set out on a delightful walking tour of Quedlinburg, a beautifully preserved medieval town and UNESCO World Heritage Site. Strolling along cobbled lanes lined with over 1,300 half-timbered houses, we discover a town steeped in charm and history. Admire the quaint squares, picturesque architecture and romantic alleyways, all set beneath the watchful gaze of the Romanesque Collegiate Church perched on the hill. With every corner offering a postcard-perfect view, Quedlinburg is a joy to explore on foot.

A true highlight of our holiday is a journey aboard the legendary Harz Brocken Railway, winding through the scenic beauty of the Harz Mountains. Pulled by a historic steam locomotive, the train climbs steadily from Wernigerode, passing dense forests, peaceful valleys and dramatic rock formations on its way to the mystical Brocken - the highest peak in northern Germany. With the rhythmic chug of the engine and breathtaking views at every turn, this magical ride is unforgettable. At the summit, enjoy panoramic vistas over Harz National Park, visit the summit's visitor centre, savour regional dishes at the mountain inn, or take a gentle stroll. A nostalgic and enchanting slice of German railway heritage.

This morning, we check out of our hotel and begin our journey to Cologne, pausing en route to explore the charming town of Goslar. Nestled on the edge of the Harz Mountains, this beautifully preserved medieval gem is known for its cobbled streets, colourful half-timbered houses and impressive Romanesque cathedral. Later in Cologne, we enjoy a farewell dinner in Cologne at a local Brauhaus.
