Description
An area rich in natural beauty, cultural heritage and lively traditions, Germany’s southernmost state of Bavaria has plenty to offer visitors. Together we explore this charming region with a scenic tour of the Romantic Road, one of Germany’s oldest tourist routes, which combines picturesque medieval walled towns and half-timbered houses with idyllic scenery. We also discover Bavaria’s capital city, Munich, and Lindau, a charming old island town on the eastern shores of Lake Constance.
Itinerary
Itinerary
Day 1
Ferry to Calais and overnight stay in France on a bed and breakfast basis.

Day 2
Continue on to our hotel in Langenau, stopping en-route in the spa town of Baden-Baden.

Day 3
We set off on a tour of the Romantic Road, one of the most well-travelled tourist routes in Germany. We combine picture-book scenery and sweeping vistas with visits to the medieval walled towns of Rothenburg and Dinkels, which feature beautiful half-timbered buildings, cobbled streets and alleyways.

Day 4
Day at leisure

Day 5
We visit Munich, the capital of Bavaria and one of Germany’s most attractive cities. Lying near the foot of the German Alps, the city is famous for its stunning architectural wonders, including the Frauenkirche, Munich's largest church with its two dome-topped Gothic towers and the City Hall in the Marienplatz, a lively square in the heart of the city.

Day 6
Join an optional excursion to charming Nuremberg, famous for its medieval walls, Gothic churches and ancient castle that give the city its distinctive skyline. Despite having been severely damaged in World War Two, many of Nuremberg’s medieval buildings have been painstakingly restored to their former glory. Our visit includes entrance to the former Nazi Rally Grounds, a vast area covering almost 11 square kilometres, scattered with the ruins of monumental structures, where Nazi party rallies were held between 1933 and 1938.

Day 7
Our destination today is the town of Lindau, uniquely located on an island on the eastern side of Lake Constance and set against a stunning backdrop of mountains. Explore the historic structures, lively squares and picturesque alleyways of the Old Town, stroll along the lakeside promenade or head to the bustling harbour where the entrance is flanked by a Bavarian lion and lighthouse.

Day 8
Travel to our overnight hotel in France, stopping en-route in the ancient university city of Heidelberg. A light evening meal is included tonight.

Day 9
Continue to Calais for our return ferry home.

Heidelberg
The beautiful city of Heidelberg has plenty of charm and historic attractions. Built on the banks of the River Neckar, Germany's oldest and most famous university city is surrounded by lush green forests and is renowned for its hilltop castle, iconic Old Bridge and Baroque-style Old Town full of narrow streets and grand, beautifully-preserved buildings. Pop to the Marktplatz to grab some local cuisine (anyone for crispy roast pork knuckles?) before browsing the little shops and don’t forget to admire the famous red sandstone Church of the Holy Spirit with its iconic basilica.
