Join us as we head to Hayling Island, a haven for wildlife and our base for our Sussex Bygone Years tour. Stay in the beautiful 4-star Langstone Hotel on the Langstone Quays Resort, overlooking the estuary and harbour. This wonderful tour will give you a taste of what this historic area of West Sussex has to offer as you immerse yourself with visits to some of its best attractions. Walk in the footsteps of Romans with a visit to the awe-inspiring Fishbourne Roman Palace and Gardens, the largest Roman home in Britain. Discover what rural life in Sussex was like at the Weald and Downland Museum, a hidden gem in the heart of the picturesque South Downs, enjoy uncovering over 1,000 years of history with over 50 relocated historic houses to explore. With a story that began in 1067 there’s lots to discover on a visit to Arundel Castle. The castle contains many original features such as the Norman Keep, medieval gatehouse and the Barbican. Wander the award-winning tropical and English Gardens, a treat for the senses. Along with free time in historic Chichester, Bosham and Arundel this taste of Sussex has something for everyone and will leave you wanting more.
Itinerary
Monday
Depart Leyland at 08.00hrs for our journey to the Langstone Quays Resort, Hayling Island with a suitable lunch stop en-route.
Tuesday - Thursday
Free time in the resort with the following excursions:
Half day - today we spend half a day relaxing at the resort with an opportunity to use the wonderful leisure facilities or explore the surrounding area and its wildlife, half day visit to the Weald and Downland Open Air Museum.
Full day - visit to Bosham, a small attractive village on Chichester Harbour, once inhabited by Romans, this is where legend has it that the Danish King Canute sat in a chair, surrounded by his courtiers and demanded the waves to go back, needless to say he got his feet wet. Canute's 8 year old daughter drowned at Bosham and is buried in Bosham Church in a Saxon coffin at the foot of the chancel steps. Walk in footsteps of wealthy Romans at Fishbourne Roman Palace with the rest of the day free to explore historic Chichester, compact and pleasant to walk on foot wander the pedestrianised city neatly enclosed within city walls, with broad streets housing wonderful architecture, listed buildings and the magnificent cathedral.
Full day - todays excursion takes us to Arundel with free time to explore the charming, stylish, picturesque town packed with history, includes a visit to the magnificent Arundel Castle, Keep and Gardens.
Friday
Check out of our hotel following breakfast for our return journey home with a suitable lunch stop en-route.
