Itinerary
DAYS 1-2 Departure, overnight hotel and Oban: A morning departure, stopping for lunch en route to our overnight hotel. Next morning after breakfast we continue to Oban for our one night stay.
DAY 3 Travel to Benbecula via the Isle of Skye: Heading north from Oban, we pass Fort William before driving to the village of Fort Augustus, on the southern shore of Loch Ness. Take in views of the Loch and the Abbey within the village before we continue through spectacular Highland scenery towards Kyle of Lochalsh and the Isle of Skye, stopping en route for a photo opportunity at beautiful Eilean Donan Castle, one of the most iconic images of Scotland. We cross by the road bridge onto the Isle of Skye and enjoy a scenic drive past the dramatic Cuillin Hills and through the island’s capital, Portree. On arrival into the north shore port of Uig, catch the ferry across to North Uist, arriving in the evening at our hotel on the island of Benbecula, where we spend the next 2 nights.
DAY 4 Benbecula: Explore the beautiful surroundings of Benbecula, the ‘Island of Fords’, like a stepping stone between North and South Uist, linked by causeways to both of its bigger neighbours. Enjoy secluded beaches, beautiful scenery and a host of native wildlife. Benbecula’s landscape of small islands and rocky islets, characterful cottages and historic monuments offers a wealth of opportunities for exploration.
DAY 5 Travel to Isle of Lewis and Stornoway via the Isle of Harris: We travel northwards for a spot of island-hopping! From Benbecula, we head across North Uist, a stunning blend of sandy beaches, freshwater lochs and rolling moorland hills. It’s just 13 miles to travel right across North Uist and onto Berneray, reputedly one of HRH Prince Charles’ favourite destinations. From here, board the ferry, crossing the Sound of Harris onto the Isle of Harris, which offers an incredible diversity in its landscapes – from the rocky shore in the east to the golden sandy beaches in the west. Upon arrival at the port of Leverburgh, make a visit to 16th century St Clements Church at Rodel. The Isle of Harris is linked by road to the Isle of Lewis, and offers some of the most dramatic UK coastal scenery. Our final destination tonight is Stornoway, the capital of Lewis, where we stay for 2 nights. Stornoway is a delightful destination that offers great shopping, a host of traditional pubs and a harbour filled with common seals.
DAY 6 Isle of Lewis: Enjoy a tour of the north island’s fantastic scenery. Lewis is the largest and most popular of the Western Isles but it remains refreshingly unspoilt and uncrowded. Home to some of the most important seabird colonies in the UK, this is a haven to all forms of wildlife. On a circular tour of the island today, visit Carloway Broch, an ancient Iron Age fortification dating back over 2000 years, and enjoy an included visit to the Calanais Standing Stones, one of the best-preserved megalithic sites in the whole of Scotland.
DAY 7 Stornoway and travel to Ullapool: Enjoy a relaxing morning exploring the town of Stornoway before we board the early afternoon ferry to mainland Scotland, arriving into Ullapool in the late afternoon.
DAY 8 & LAST DAY Travel to overnight hotel and travel home: Today we drive across the famous spectacular Scottish countryside from the Highlands down through the Lowlands to our overnight hotel in North England. Next morning we depart for home, arriving during the evening.
