Description
Originating in the Puy district of extinct volcanoes, the Dordogne flows west for almost 300 miles into the Garonne near Bordeaux. Its valley is one of spectacular gorges and frequent dams, marked with innumerable castles as one descends towards Aquitaine - the area fought over between England and France in the Hundred Years' War. Our base is Loubressac, a small village with spectacular views over the valley, including Castelnau, one of the most important castles in France. This area was one of the cradles of early humanity and the caves at Lascaux were home to Cro-Magnon man and contain the world's most famous prehistoric art. Our excursions take us both up and down the valley as we savour this delightful area with its distinctive sights, sounds and scents of the French southwest.
