Description
Nestling at the head of its lake, Annecy is at once an important tourist centre and a busy city. Its old town, dominated by the castle, is very photogenic with narrow winding cobbled streets lined with charming arcades. Alongside the sleepy river there are lovely sunny quays with numerous delightful cafés and flowers in profusion. In contrast to nearby Geneva, Annecy was staunchly Catholic during the Reformation and its late Renaissance cathedral is one of many historic buildings dating from those turbulent times. If you tire of exploring the historic buildings and the many shops and cafés, take a swim in the lovely waters of the lake or relax in the shady parks.
