Description
Atlanta • Macon • Tallahassee • Wakulla State Park • Orlando • Key Largo • Naples • Key West • Clearwater
Dinner on day 11 or 12
Travelling the length and breadth of Florida is an exhilarating experience, revealing much more than the attractions of Orlando and the fine beaches of the east and west coasts although, of course, we sample these as well. But the very different environments of ‘primitive’ Wakulla State Park and the Everglades, the romance of the Keys, and the dramatic scientific achievements of the late 20th century summed up at Kennedy Space Center, make this holiday ‘fun’ on many sensory levels. Witness the betweenthe-wars sumptuous living of tycoons such as Henry ford, enjoying Walt Disney World® Resort’s Magic Kingdom®, or dinner cruising in fashionable Clearwater, that’s only part of the picture in a two-week adventure which concludes with a leisurely three night stay at the elegant Hilton Hotel set on the idyllic white sands of Clearwater Beach where you can enjoy the glorious climate on our wide range of departure dates throughout the year.
Itinerary
DAY 1 LONDON • ATLANTA
We begin with Titan’s VIP Home Departure Service™ to London Heathrow Airport and your scheduled British Airways flight direct to Atlanta, Georgia. On arrival our coach will transfer you to the Hilton or Hyatt Place hotel, our base for the next two nights.
DAY 2 ATLANTA
This morning we have arranged a tour of Atlanta, known as the ‘Gone With The Wind’ city, where we include a visit to the Martin Luther King Memorial, ending at Peachtree Plaza in the heart of the lively city allowing free time to explore. You may wish to visit the Georgia Aquarium, the world’s largest and home to over 100,000 animals, or Underground Atlanta, with over six blocks of shopping, dining and entertainment. Your tour manager will be able to assist with booking an optional excursion to Stone Mountain Park, Georgia’s most visited attraction with over 3200 acres of parkland centred around a giant granite monolith. Atlanta, with a wealthy business community, is a sophisticated international city with superb shopping and vibrant night life.
DAY 3 ATLANTA • TALLAHASSEE
We depart this morning for historic Macon with its leafy streets, lined with colonial-style houses. Here we visit Georgia Music Hall of Fame where you can experience the history and influences of Georgia’s music throughout the years. Many famous musicians launched their careers here such as James Brown and Otis Redding. After some time to explore we continue south to Florida’s state capital, Tallahassee, and the Holiday Inn hotel. This city, with its roads canopied by ancient trees, has deep roots in Florida’s history with the Old State Capitol building taking centre stage.
DAY 4 TALLAHASSEE • KISSIMMEE
Today we visit the ‘Heart of Africa’ in the heart of Florida. Wakulla State Park is a combination of swampland and jungle that has remained largely undisturbed since the beginning of time. On arrival we board our boat and cruise sedately along the river where many Tarzan films were shot. Here we enter a world of teeming wildlife where ibis, herons, egrets and many other beautiful birds, which can be seen along the forested banks, are unperturbed by our presence. From fallen logs midstream, alligators view us with apparent lack of interest. In the clear water fish swim gracefully past. We continue to Orlando and nearby Kissimmee, where we stay at the Radisson Resort Orlando Celebration for the next three nights.
DAY 5 ORLANDO / KISSIMMEE
No visit to Orlando would be complete without a visit to the Kennedy Space Centre and Cape Canaveral. It has been almost five decades since Alan Shepard first launched from Florida to become the first American in space and here at the centre you can discover and experience the history behind it. The day at the Visitor Complex includes a tour of NASA’s Launch Headquarters where we take a close up look at the massive launch pads. The tour also includes a stop at the four-storey observation gantry where you can enjoy a bird’s eye view of one of the world’s busiest space launch facilities. In the afternoon we return to our hotel. Remainder of the day is free.
DAY 6 ORLANDO / KISSIMMEE
Included in this holiday is a full day’s pass to Walt Disney Worlds Resort’s Magic Kingdom® or Epcot Centre®, centred around the lovable Disney Characters. Both parks feature many well-loved and iconic sights such as Cinderella’s Castle and Epcot’s Spaceship Earth. These parks provide something for everyone with shows and parades being featured throughout the day. Why not enjoy the Walt Disney World® Railroad that runs along the perimeter of the park and makes stops at all the must see attractions?
DAY 7 KISSIMMEE • KEY LARGO
We leave this morning and journey south to Fort Lauderdale. Here is an opportunity to stroll along the pedestrian promenades lined with sidewalk cafés and a chance to admire the long stretches of beautiful beaches. Free time to discover the many restaurants in the city and explore the wide variety of shops and boutiques. Later in the day we have our first glimpse of the stunning Florida Keys as we arrive at the Hilton Key Largo Beach Resort, our hotel for the next two nights.
DAY 8 KEY WEST
Today we continue along the Keys for a full day’s visit to fabulous Key West, the southernmost city in the Continental U.S. and a popular haven for writers and artists. We take the Conch Train, a trolley tour which explores the island and affords views of ornate Victorian mansions, tin-roofed conch houses and many historical sites. This afternoon we take a step back in time and visit Ernest Hemingway’s home, located in the very heart of Old Town Key West where the Noble Prize winner lived and wrote with his many cats for more than ten years. Built in 1851, the Spanish Colonial style home boasts the first pool built in Key West and still contains furniture used by the Hemingway family. We depart for our hotel in Key Largo, in time to enjoy the dramatic sunset.
DAY 9 KEY LARGO • NAPLES
This morning we leave the Keys and head to the Everglades, the third largest National Park and the largest subtropical wilderness in the United States. Here we venture into the heart of the park and experience the Sawgrass marsh and diverse wildlife from the comfort of a tram. This narrated tour will also include a stop at an observation tower where you can enjoy a panoramic view of this fantastic landscape. Heading north only a short distance we arrive at the chic and affluent town of Naples well known for its sun drenched beaches and upscale shopping districts. Here we stay at the Holiday Inn.
DAY 10 NAPLES • CLEARWATER
Today we visit the homes of two remarkable inventors at the impressive Thomas Edison and Henry Ford Winter Estates in their tropical riverside setting. The tour of the estates includes the charmingly restored home of Thomas Edison - surrounded by a huge botanical garden, the laboratory and museum, and the Henry Ford home which has been authentically restored to its 1916 - 1931 period with automobiles such as a 1914 Model T on display. Later this morning we follow the picturesque Florida coastline north to Clearwater with its miles of white beaches and the Hilton Clearwater Beach Resort.
DAY 11 CLEARWATER
A whole day to relax, soak up the sun and explore. You will also have the opportunity to take up the optional excursion to visit the city of St. Petersburg, Florida’s fourth largest city. Often known as ‘The City of the Arts’ it boasts a varied selection of six major downtown Museums, with the Salvador Dali Museum not to be missed. Take advantage of the ‘Looper’ pink trolley, an excellent way to tour the city with stops at all the major sights. This evening we enjoy a dinner cruise with dancing to live music. Time to stroll along the outer decks and enjoy the balmy evening as you cruise on the calm inland waters before returning to the hotel.
