Description

A new holiday for 2010 visiting Venice, the ancient and famous city of canals, a land of art and culture. With an included visit to the famous Postonja Caves this holiday will leave you with valuable memories.

Itinerary

Day 1 Departure
A morning departure to Dover and our ferry crossing to Calais. We continue through France and our overnight hotel.

Day 2 Travel to Lake Lucerne
After breakfast we continue through the French countryside, passing over the Vosges Mountains to Lake Lucerne and to our overnight hotel.

Optional Excursion
Half Day Boat cruise on Lake Lucerne You will have the opportunity to take an optional boat cruise on the lake.

Day 3 Travel to Mestre
Leaving Lucerne we continue into Italy and into Mestre and to our resort for our 4 night stay.

Days 4-6 At leisure
At leisure in Mestre with two included and one optional excursion.

Mestre is the mainland town connected to Venice by rail and road bridges over the lagoon. Mestre’s history goes back to the Middle Ages, though it was always overshadowed by its powerful neighbour Venice. Unlike Venice, it had no lagoon to protect it, and the fortifications here were battled over, conquered, destroyed and rebuilt in the warring and squabbling that went on throughout mainland Italy for centuries.

Included Excursion
Full Day Venice A full day included excursion to Venice the ancient and famous city of canals, St. Marks Square, the Doges Palace, the Bridge of Sighs and much much more. From the hotel we travel via public transport with the aid of our Courier. The rest of the day is free to explore and shop around this beautiful city. To round off a truly memorable day, you might like an optional guided tour of Venice and an optional gondola ride You then return back to the hotel at your own leisure. (Please Note: This excursion is not suitable for wheelchair and mobility vehicle users.)

Included Excursion
Full Day Postonja Caves & Lipica Stud Farm A full day included excursion takes us into Slovenia and to the famous Postonja Caves, which is the largest known cave system in Slovenia. There are longer caves in the world, but a visit to a cave such as Postojna deserves full attention due to the diversity of shapes, expansive cave areas, stalactite and stalagmite formations and water characteristics. This afternoon we continue onto Lipica to visit Lipica Stud Farm which is the home of one of the world’s most famous breed of horses, the Lippizaner. Here you will have a guided tour and horse show. After watching the horses perform, for an additional fee you can take a ride in one of the horse-drawn carriages.

Optional Excursion
Full Day Burano by boat A free day or join us on an optional excursion by boat to the Islands of Burano. The Island of Burano is the most picturesque of Venetian Island of the Lagoon. Famous for its lace-making industry, the pretty fishing village has its streets and canals lined by pastel coloured houses.

Day 7 Travel to overnight hotel
We return back through Italy and into Austria to our overnight hotel.

Day 8 Travel to overnight hotel
We depart Austria and travel through to Germany to our overnight hotel.

Last Day Travel home
We depart for Calais and our ferry crossing to Dover, arriving home during the evening.

Venue Information

Hotel Delfino, Mestre
We stay for 4 nights at the Hotel Delfino in Mestre on the outskirts of Venice; near to the hotel you will find transport connections into the city centre of Venice. Facilities at the hotel include a restaurant and bar. All bedrooms are en suite and have satellite TV, air conditioning and telephone.
