Description
A chance to explore one of France’s most beautiful regions. Built on a cliff-face towering over the Alzou Canyon, our holiday centre enjoys a remarkable setting with real charm and character.
Itinerary
Day 1 Departure
A morning departure to Dover and our ferry crossing to Calais. We then travel southwards to our chosen overnight hotel.
Day 2 Travel to Rocamadour via Limoges
We travel through the rolling hills of the Haute-Vienne via the famed china-making centre of Limoges. There is the opportunity to take an optional visit to Oradour-sur-Glane. The town was never rebuilt, after the Nazis destroyed it in 1944. We continue past Brive and into the Dordogne area to arrive at our spectacular holiday base of Rocamadour, for our four night stay.
Days 3-5 At leisure
At leisure in Rocamadour with two included excursions and one optional excursion. There is plenty of time for exploring Rocamadour. Here you could spend time by the hotel pool or perhaps take the funicular railway from the hotel to the castle and chapel. In the town you’ll find cobbled streets, shops and a myriad of medieval buildings.
Included Excursion
Full Day River Vézère, Sarlat & Beynac A full day included scenic drive exploring the tranquil setting of the River Vézère. We’ll be visiting the area for a glimpse of the Dordogne’s prehistoric past and the highlight of the day is a visit to Sarlat, where you will have the opportunity to take an optional walking tour in one of the most attractive towns in the whole area. Strolling along the paved lanes of the old town revives 1000 years of authentic architecture where, from cobblestones to lauze-roofs (flat-stones), gold typically predominates. Leaving Sarlat we continue to the town of Beynac where you may take an optional boat cruise to view the feudal castle and château. The site of Beynac and its castle is undoubtedly one of the finest in France. Beynac is a paradise for painters and photographers in all seasons.
Included Excursion
New Half Day Figeac We have an included afternoon excursion visiting Figeac, a fascinating town of narrow streets and ancient walls. A friendly mediaeval town nestling on the banks of the river Célé in ancient Quercy. The beautiful countryside which surrounds it contrasts the rugged Jurassic limestone plateau of the Causses with the lush green hills of the appropriately named Garden of Ségala. In the old town, pale amber stone buildings with gothic arches fronting the narrow streets rise to reveal picturesque open-lofted roof areas.
Optional Excursion
Half Day Gouffre de Padirac An optional morning excursion visiting the Gouffre de Padirac, the best underground caves in the Dordogne. Due to the number of rivers and the local geology it’s no surprise that the Dordogne has some magnificent cave complexes. This spectacular cave complex is impressive on a large scale, and part of the trip is by gondola. (This is offered on the same day as the included afternoon excursion to Figeac).
Day 6 Travel to overnight
We retrace our steps bound for our last overnight hotel hotel in Paris.
Last Day Travel home
We depart for Calais and our ferry crossing to Dover, arriving home during the evening.
