Numerous small towns and villages line the shores with their lakeside promenades and cafés. Magnificent villas and gardens can be reached both by water and land and this holiday allows you to progress at your own relaxed pace as each new vista unfolds before you.Menaggio is one of Lake Como’s most attractive resorts and an ideal base for exploration. Its tree-lined promenade, where the gentle blue waters lap at the shores, and its narrow cobbled streets ascending towards the fine villas perched on the hillside overlooking the town, make for a wonderful stay. The tranquil town of Varenna is located on Lake Como’s eastern shore. With a medieval character and cobbled streets, it houses one of the oldest surviving churches on the lake, its high spire standing majestically above the yellow ochre and rusty red village. A ruined 11th century castle overlooks Varenna’s narrow streets and attractive town square. The villas and gardens are the main attraction and also well worth visiting are Villa dei Cipressi and Villa Monastero, the latter dating from the 13th century. Tremezzo, Bellagio and Como are all within easy reach by ferry from Menaggio. Tremezzo, famous for the Villa Carlotta, with its splendidly landscaped gardens, should not be missed. Bellagio, with its elegant lakeside promenade and cafés and the gardens of Villa Melzi, designed by Giocondo Albertolli, are a delight to wander through. Como, the provincial capital, is both a tourist resort and the centre of the Italian silk industry, a bustling town with an attractive pedestrianised area dominated by the magnificent façade of the cathedral and the elegant Piazza Cavour.Duration 7 days, 6 nights in hotel in Menaggio.
