Ever since Queen Victoria stayed on its shores, Lake Maggiore has been a favourite destination with the British, who have been enticed by its Mediterranean atmosphere and legendary beauty. The lakeside promenades are lined with magnolias and verbena, whilst lemon, orange and carob trees can be found on the worldfamous Borromean Islands, belonging to the Borromei of Milan since the 12th century. Of these four islands, Isola Bella, Isola Madre and Isola dei Pescatori are the most famous. The former is the home to the spectacular 17th century Palazzo Borromeo and the latter, as its name, Fisherman’s Island suggests, still exudes some of its fishing village atmosphere.Overlooking the Borromean Islands and surrounded by peaceful hillsides is the 19th century resort of Stresa. This lively resort is centred around the lakeside promenade with its exotic plants and stylish hotels, as well as the old town with its cobbled squares and narrow streets.


A short boat ride away and lying at the centre of the lake, are the romantic Borromean Islands, which cannot fail to enchant. Isola Bella and the Palazzo Borromeo, built by Count Borromeo for his wife as a Baroque island paradise, is home to beautiful landscaped gardens, fountains, white peacocks and grottoes.


Further along the coast and towards the Swiss border, the Villa Taranto houses an extensive botanical collection.
