Based at the Duke of Cornwall hotel in Plymouth, our tour of South Devon takes in some of its oldest attractions set amidst the wild beauty of Dartmoor. We feature Morwellham Quay, Buckland Abbey and the Mayflower Museum, and enjoy a railway journey on the South Devon railway and a scenic cruise across Plymouth Sound.
Itinerary
Sunday: We depart the Travel Centre this morning to make our way south, heading for Plymouth, arriving at the hotel late afternoon where tea/coffee will be waiting for us.
Monday: We step back in time this morning as we visit the award-winning Morwellham Quay which forms part of a World Heritage Site featuring the only open copper mine in the UK, made accessible to visitors by a riverside railway. Next we make our way to Tavistock with free time for lunch and a stroll around the ancient Pannier market. In the afternoon, we enjoy a guided tour of Buckland Abbey, part house, part museum, crammed with treasures and surrounded by meadows with magnificent views of the Tavy Valley.
Tuesday: We head to the Mayflower Steps in Plymouth this morning, from where we enjoy a 1 hour return harbour cruise across the Plymouth Sound, past Plymouth Hoe and Drake’s Island, heading to the Royal Naval Dockyard. Once back on dry land, we visit the Mayflower Museum. In the afternoon, we enjoy free time in the old harbour area of Plymouth, browsing the historic independent shops and cafés.
Wednesday: Today, we enjoy a return journey on the South Devon Railway from Buckfastleigh to Totnes, along a seven mile stretch of line that runs along the stunning valley of the River Dart. In the afternoon, we have a scenic drive across spectacularly beautiful Dartmoor.
Thursday: We bid a fond farewell to the hotel this morning, making our way north, making comfort stops, arriving back at the Travel Centre late afternoon.

Duke of Cornwall Hotel
This imposing hotel is a Grade II listed building dating back to 1863 and is located on Plymouth Hoe and opposite the Pavilions Centre. The hotel is decorated in traditional style, with elegant public areas and a sweeping staircase, retaining many original features throughout.
All 72 bedrooms are en suite with tea/coffee making facilities & television. Due to the hotel being a historical building, guests may encounter steps along the corridors and in rooms. The majority of rooms have shower over bath.
