DAYS 2 NEW YORK
This morning we have arranged for a city tour to enable you to become acquainted with this most fascinating and exciting of cities. Our aim is to highlight the many varied delights on offer in New York, from the antiquated character of Greenwich Village to the cosmopolitan Soho in Lower Manhattan, the impressive United Nations Building, the beautiful Art Deco pinnacle of the Chrysler Building and the iconic Empire State Building in Midtown, to the vast playground of Central Park that dominates Uptown. This afternoon you are free to explore the city at your leisure. If you wish to meander through the wealth of architecture and explore, then head for the blocks south of Houston or SoHo. Here the buildings, once used for warehouses, now form loft apartments for artists and sculptors but the 19th century architecture, ranging from Victorian to to Gothic, has been preserved and helped SoHo become one of the city’s prized residential areas. Next door to SoHo is TriBeCa or the triangle below Canal, a mecca for people looking for fine dining, and Greenwich Village is an upscale area of the city, as close to Paris as any American neighbourhood can be.
DAYS 3 NEW YORK
Today if free for you to further enjoy the city. You cannot visit New York and not experience the wealth of shops on offer to the visitor, something New Yorkers have made an art form. From the glamorous Fifth Avenue stores and the world renowned but understated elegance of Tiffany's, to Saks, Macy's and Bloomingdales, the choice and temptation on offer is spectacular. Next to Saks is the magnificent St Patrick’s Cathedral, convenient for over-enthusiastic shoppers to do penance if they have been led astray. This evening you will have a wide and extensive choice of places to dine and with such an eclectic mix of cultures and restaurants on offer you will not be disappointed.
DAY 4 NEW YORK • BOSTON
We bid farewell to New York as we board our train bound for Boston. En route our journey takes us through the changing landscapes of Connecticut and Rhode Island before entering Massachusetts. On arrival the coach is on hand for the transfer to your hotel for the next three nights, the excellently positioned Hilton Back Bay close to all the city’s major sights and attractions.
DAYS 5 BOSTON
This morning we have arranged for a comprehensive tour of Boston that will include the site of the famous Tea Party, as well as highlighting why this most English of cities is viewed as the cradle of American Independence. We drive through Beacon Hill, easily recognisable by the gilt dome of the Massachusetts State House and the rows of fine brick houses in the surrounding streets, to Charlestown where the USS Constitution, more commonly known as Old Ironsides, is moored, and onto Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market, one of the country's first commercial developments. Today this area is know as Faneuil Hall Marketplace and still houses butchers and fishmongers but also trendy espresso and piano bars. Later we travel the short distance to Cambridge, home to both Harvard University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology, this area is a mix of ivy clad historical buildings and youthful modernity.
DAYS 6 BOSTON
Today you are free to discover this compact city at your leisure. Boston blends old world charm of historical buildings with modern conveniences and as the city is more than 360 years old, its famous buildings are not merely civic landmarks but viewed as national icons. Boston is designed for the walker and the majority of the city’s historic and architectural delights are to be found along the Freedom Trail, a two and a half mile walk that links sixteen historic sights commencing from Boston Common, America’s oldest public park to the State House and the Old North Church and Bunker Hill. For those who enjoy the delights of shopping then Back Bay offers the more exclusive boutiques while Filenes’ famous basement is the place for bargain hunters.
