Excursions
FULL DAY: This morning we make our way into Durham where there is plenty of time to enjoy this ancient city with its Viking heritage and links with the monks of Lindisfarne. The Norman cathedral, set above the River Wear, and the medieval cobbled streets are all worth exploring. In the afternoon we reach the small seaside resort of Seaham, with a small harbour, sandy beach and cliff top walks.
FULL DAY: This morning we make our way to Whitby, a popular harbour town and tourist centre overlooked by its famous ruined abbey. It is synonymous with Captain Cook, and we include a visit to the Captain Cook Memorial Museum, located in the 17th Century house where he lodged as an apprentice seaman. The resort is also where Bram Stoker wrote his famous novel about Dracula and is a draw for Dracula fans from across the globe. We return across the moorlands of the North York Moors, visiting the ancient market town of Pickering.
FULL DAY: A full day excursion today into the Yorkshire Dales National Park. We make a short visit to Richmond at the gateway to the Dales, with its majestic castle and attractive centre, before we continue into the rolling hills of Wensleydale, passing by Askrigg, the fictional Darrowby in the original TV success, All Creatures Great and Small, to visit Hawes, where the Wensleydale Creamery is a popular visit with its famous cheese production. Concluding our day, we pause to view the famous Ribblehead Viaduct, a spectacular feat of engineering spanning 440 yards and 24 arches.
