Description
Montreal • Ottawa • Toronto • Niagara Falls • Albany • Old Bennington • Woodstock • Concord • Lexington • Boston • Newport • Mystic • New York • Mount Laurel • Philadelphia • Baltimore • Washington DC
The Eastern seaboard was rightly named the New World by its English and French conquerors - who were themselves conquered by its breathtaking beauty. A short acquaintance is enough to demonstrate to any traveller why they were so fierce to defend it from the influence of Europe. Which is not to suggest that the Canadians don’t love their English Queen or the Bostonians their ‘English’ reputation - while French Montreal sees Paris as its friendly rival for style and chic. Between that city’s Gallic charm, the cosmic wonder of Niagara and the glorious natural harbour of Boston, lies countryside of enchantment, particularly that of New England. Add the vibrance and energy of New York, the charm of Philadelphia and the elegance of Washington and you have the perfect holiday.
Itinerary
DAY 1 LONDON • MONTREAL
We begin with Titan HiTours Home Departure Service to London Heathrow Airport and your scheduled British Airways flight direct to Montreal. On arrival our coach transfers you to the Best Western Ville-Marie Hotel or Doubletree Montreal.
DAY 2 MONTREAL
Lovely from Spring to Autumn, Montreal suffers severe winters, and since its French Canadian population like to get about and eat out year round, they have constructed a system of underground walkways and complexes, connected to the underground railway system, that makes it extraordinarily easy, without overcoats or raincoats, in all weathers to visit shops, cinemas and restaurants. This makes the city very easy to explore, and after this morning’s tour you will be free to absorb the unique atmosphere of the Old Town, take (superb) coffee in the French Quarter and perhaps visit the world famous botanical gardens with its water garden offering a dazzling display of aquatic plants and its “climatron” of 14 connecting greenhouses, in which flamingoes and other wading birds are to be seen amid the sub-tropical foliage. There is plenty of nightlife in fashionable Crescent Street and the restaurant choice rates among Canada’s best.
DAY 3 MONTREAL • OTTAWA • TORONTO
We depart for Ottawa, one of the world’s most striking capitals, where three rivers converge and the parliament buildings - not unreminiscent of our own Westminster, with the Peace Tower standing in for Big Ben - command a bluff overlooking the Ottawa River and green spaces backed by beautiful Gatineau Park. This afternoon we travel on to the old town of Kingston and then to Toronto and the Delta Chelsea Hotel, well located for exploring the city.
DAY 4 TORONTO • NIAGARA FALLS
Our morning sightseeing tour introduces you to the contrasts of the city, from its splendidly restored 19th century buildings to the ultra-modern shopping malls and gleaming skyscrapers. Afterwards you are free to explore Harbourfront, where much of the old docks’ area has been reclaimed in an imaginative spread of shops, restaurants and cafés, great to sit out and enjoy the views and the liveliness. A journey up the CN Tower, which pierces the skyline to a height of 1,815 feet, is an exhilarating experience; the speed of ascent of the plexiglass elevator on the outside of the building is 20 feet per second. Later this afternoon we depart for Niagara Falls, where 34 million gallons of water a minute roar over the limestone cliffs. Our hotel is the Hampton Inn at the Falls.
DAY 5 NIAGARA FALLS • ALBANY
We leave Niagara today and cross into the USA and travel east to the Best Western Sovereign Hotel, Albany.
DAY 6 ALBANY • ANDOVER
Our journey eastward across New York State brings us into glorious Vermont at Old Bennington. The white clapboard church with its graceful lines and three-tiered steeple fronts the cemetery where the revolutionary founders of the state are buried. Passing through the Green Mountain National Forest, we take in a galaxy of picturesque villages, the pride of southern Vermont, including Manchester, a favourite resort of a number of 19th century presidents, Following a stop at the Manchester Designer Outlet, beautifully comprised of the Manchester Commons and square, we continue to Weston with its attractive green, and Plymouth, nestling among the hills. We stop at Woodstock, then turn south across the Connecticut River, passing the hilltop village of New London and into Massachusetts. Our hotel tonight is the Wyndham Hotel in Andover.

DAY 9 MYSTIC • NEW YORK
Passing through Connecticut, we arrive at the world’s most exciting city, New York, for a tour that will take in all the places you have heard about, including Central Park, the Empire State Building, Rockefeller Centre and Wall Street. We check into the perfectly located Holiday Inn Midtown, Manhattan. The rest of the day is free to take your own bites of the ‘Big Apple’.Tonight, why not visit one of the city’s many piano bars and enjoy first-class music in typical New York style.
DAY 10 NEW YORK
No visit to New York should miss Greenwich Village, lively by day or night, with its small shops and bars and leafy Washington Square flanked by elegant houses. A quick and easy way of getting about is by the famous yellow cabs, while buses are cheap and frequent. No doubt you will want to pop into Macy’s, the world’s largest department store, Saks on Fifth Avenue, or Bloomingdales close to Central Park - you can usually find some bargains. The park itself is a delight and you may care to take a drink in the Plaza Hotel’s Oak Bar, from which Cary Grant was kidnapped in Alfred Hitchcock’s “North by Northwest”. Times Square is the glittering centre of theatreland, and your tour manager will be pleased to advise on good places to eat tonight.
DAY 11 NEW YORK • MOUNT LAUREL
A further morning to enjoy New York before boarding our coach in the afternoon and journeying southwards to Mount Laurel and the Wyndham Hotel.
DAY 12 PHILADELPHIA • WASHINGTON DC
Today we visit ‘The City of Brotherly Love’ as William Penn described the fine city of Philadelphia. Its cobbled streets and red-brick Georgian buildings are particularly attractive and best explored on foot or in one of the horse drawn carriages available for hire. The Liberty Bell, on display at Independence Mall was rung to beckon Philadelphians to hear the first reading of the Declaration of Independence. In the afternoon we travel to Baltimore. This vibrant city, nestling on the shores of Chesapeake Bay, has a reputation for combining a big city atmosphere with small town charm. The waterfront area offers a beautiful harbour complex, a vast choice of restaurants, promenades and marinas. Here we have the opportunity to dine at leisure before travelling on to either the Holiday Inn Central or Hilton Washington, our hotel for the next two nights.
